A Long Leash for Our Clients

I dreamed I was at work in a fancy new building, and there were six very important people coming for a visit. I’m not sure if they were clients or customers, but I was tasked with planning the visit. Elizabeth had talked to the receptionist (who I didn’t know) and put my name on the welcome board as chair of the “wall” committee which was apparently the job of getting the rooms ready. There was a huge conference room that wasn’t closed off but was open to the lobby, and there was a big table and a small table in it. I was waiting on a tablecloth to be added to the big table. When it finally got there, I started setting out food.  Evidently, we made our own brands of food. There were egg rolls and a tart/pie (kind of like the old McDonald’s apple pies.) They had sent some that had two versions – Before (wrapped) and After (unwrapped.) I had found some cute plates in the cabinets in the room and so was working on staging the food. There was also a french fry holder that was really cute but we didn’t have any fries. There were other people (who brought the table cloth) that were setting out fancy plates and silverware.

Meanwhile, the six people came in. It was five women and a man, and the man stayed in the other room. They were very brisk and in a hurry and they were early (before the room was ready.)  So I seated them somewhere else. In the meantime, we were supposed to be celebrating my old high school friend Alison’s birthday. Everyone was upset because I didn’t have time to do it and set up.  So they brought everything into that room. Sadly, the only thing that we had were these little cookie/cracker sticks in a can (kind of like the breadsticks at Newks) but they were dirty shapes like you might have at a bridal shower.  I couldn’t even find the gift I had for her.  And everyone was eating at the big table and I was worried it would get dirty before the clients came in.

Once that was over, I had to get copies of the call forwarding. The process hadn’t worked as designed, and so I was trying to get the list from the man in the other room. He was annoyed and trying to leave.  I gave everyone the dinner plans and they left. I was a little worried about the food I’d set out because now it was going to be cold for the next morning.

In the lobby, there were two elevators and two stairwells. Someone pointed out that if there was a fire in the lobby we would all be trapped, and I argued we could take the stairs. They said there was no outside exit. I argued, and so we walked to the bottom and it just emptied out into an indoor atrium fully enclosed.

When I went back up, it was time to leave. Buster was there and there were two ladies who said how cute he was. I asked if he was ready to leave and he started tearing around the lobby in circles.  I caught him as he almost went down the elevator with a man and pulled him back.  His leash was hanging in the other elevator wrapped around a blue wire.  When I pulled it down, the wire set off an alarm and the people at the desk were upset. They said they’d just gotten it fixed, but I asked why they wrapped the leash around it then.

The Answer’s in the Palm of Your Hand

Last night, I had a very strange dream. I was on a business trip of some sort (only not traveling with my actual co-workers that I know.) We were in a hotel – maybe a conference center, although at times I got confused and thought we were at our friends’ house (Jon and LouAnn.) Of course, it wasn’t their actual house either. I had gone outside, and there was a swimming pool. It was very natural looking, with lots of landscaping/forests around it. It looked less like a pool and more like a pond. In the back corners, it was very dark because of all the shadows. I felt like I should ask LouAnn if I could go swimming, but as I was thinking about asking, suddenly I was in the water. I was nervous about going in the back since it was so dark. I also wondered if it was stocked with fish, but the water felt great. As I was swimming around, I saw a small silvery/white thread sticking out of my hand. I got out of the water and used tweezers to pull it out, and it was extremely long. As I pulled, then it turned into a wide, brown stick maybe half a centimeter in diameter. It hurt a lot pulling it out, and I had to put pressure on my hand to make myself pull it out. But the relief was so great when it came out that I had to do it. Each time I pulled one out, another one would appear. All of them were in the palms of my hands, and they had come from swimming in the pool. Someone else started to get in, and I warned them against it.

The dream then shifted and I was back inside the hotel. We were going into a meeting that I was leading, and it was on the 11th floor of the hotel. My room was also on this floor, and there was also a fast food restaurant on this floor. I wanted to get a diet coke before the meeting, but I was worried about running late. When I got into the room, though, everyone was late, so I left to go get a diet coke. The people in the restaurant knew me because I’d been in there so much. There were some people getting these huge plastic tumblers of diet cokes, but I just ordered a regular large one. They got distracted and forgot to get it for me, then a lady tried to give me a small one. It was very chaotic. I was also looking at the cabinets and appliance doors, and there were small bottles used to help prevent them from slamming. Austin called me while I was there and told me about the same thing, and I thought that was a big coincidence.

There was also some form of betrayal. I don’t remember the details now, but someone in the group had done something, and we were trying to figure out who. There was a bathroom that had plastic sheeting on the walls (like we used to have in our restaurant on the kitchen walls.) They had put crayons in the bathroom so people could write on the walls, but then it could be washed off. I wrote something but then felt guilty about it.

Escaping the Escape Room

I’m in Atlanta this week for a work meeting, and tonight we are going to an escape room.  I’m super excited. Last night I felt like I dreamed about that all night, so I woke up exhausted!  What’s interesting is the detail of my dream…

I dreamed that my colleague Gary had been to this escape room before, and he told us that the secret was that each of the five buildings were named after the days of the week. At the time, that didn’t mean anything to me, but when we got there, that ruined the experience! We arrived, and the place was set up with five separate buildings inside a large warehouse that were all on motorized bases. There were tables set up outside each house for our dinner. We were supposed to have had two different groups, but those of us who arrived first just went on in and started.  There was a man inside on stilts, and he looked huge. He told his story, and kept stuttering as he said the word “Monday” and so immediately we all knew that we had to leave this building and go to the first building that was named Monday to solve the puzzle. I had decided to go ahead and try to figure it out without Gary’s hint. The man on stilts was smoking a cigarette that had a really strong scent. For some reason, I think it was sandlewood. I had to take my inhaler.  Then the lights went out and the house started rocking.  When it stopped, the man was gone and we were locked in. The building looked like my bedroom at home, and the drawers had my content in them. So in my mind, it was a holographic overlay. I found a bracelet on the wall with a tiny key, and the tiny key opened a tiny lock, but I didn’t see what was inside. A couple of people left immediately to go “solve” it (including my old high school friend Kristal), which made me mad. I also dreamed that Julie and Corey (two colleagues who went to the Hawks game instead of dinner) stayed out all night and met us there.

Ramblings from the Week

I wrote down a few snippets of dreams on paper next to my bed over the last week, but I didn’t write them down in full at the time, so I’m not sure which days the dreams occurred and I don’t remember the details of the dreams.  But here’s what I’ve got:

Dream 1:

car dealer/rental Terry from My Friend’s Place

angry boss

work/office bathroom

pee everywhere dropping from ceiling

no one would help

friend Matthew?

apt/clean/4some

dog

naked

mother

Ok…the only part of this dream I remember clearly was when I went into the bathroom. It was very unclean and there were pools of urine on the floor, and it was on the ceiling dripping down. No matter what I did, I couldn’t escape from getting it on me. It was disgusting and I was so grossed out. This is oddly similar to Camp Capers, where there was also a bathroom and I was getting excrement all over me.

Dream 2:

gone on trip

met guy at apt (?)

reservation at Mexican Villa in Nixa

lost on Highway 116

almost to Fayettville

Almost plane crash

cat hair in apt

Cousins at CVS exchanging —-?

This dream obviously relates to my recent trip back to Springfield. I don’t know what the significant of the number 116 is – that doesn’t mean anything to me.

Un”conventional” Medicine

It’s been a long time since I’ve written down chicken scratches on a pad by my bed. Last night I “woke up” several times with snippets of dreams, but I couldn’t pull myself out from behind the veil of sleep to actually write them down.

My issue is compounded by the fact that I’m not even interpreting these notes until 16 hours later, so… this dream will leave a little to be desired.

The notes I can read are:

Convention

copy room

permission (or maybe parmesan)

Pills to share

EO

readouts

Chased

I remember being at a work convention with my boss Elizabeth. It was very stressful and I feel like I wasn’t prepared to complete the readouts. I was looking for a copier or a printer, and I was running through the halls and couldn’t find one to use. I felt like it had been set up in a temporary room and that it had moved. I was very worried about being late.

At one point I was talking with EO (maybe we were back in our hotel room?) and I was trying to take pills. There were some tiny ones in the bottom of the pill bottle, plus other larger ones. Some of them had turned to dust, and so it was really hard to find the little ones, as they were blending in with the dust. When I tried to get them out I made a mess.

Working Through Secrets

I dreamed that I worked at the mall (where I worked during college.) I had gotten a second job at Victoria’s Secret and it was the first day of work. I was supposed to be there at 8:00, and I left my current job a few minutes early. I had to turn around and go back because I realized I wasn’t wearing any shoes. That was apparently acceptable at my other job, but I realized I had to wear shoes at Victoria’s Secret.

I put my shoes on (they were black tennis shoes) and started walking through the mall again to get there. I was worried that I should have worn my black dress shoes instead, but I thought they might hurt my feet. I realized I was likely to be late, because I had to walk the entire length of the mall from one end to the other. At one point, the only way to move forward was to go up these steep hills in the mall. The floors were slanted, and although there were some non-skid places (much like you would see in a bathtub, I still was sliding backwards. The friends I was with (one of whom helped me get the job at VS) were having no problem getting up the hills, and there were also kids clambering up, and they didn’t have any problems either. I became frustrated because I kept sliding backwards. One of the little kids looked at me and said, “You might need to ask for help. I had to have help twice climbing up!” I glared at the kid and ignored them. Then I took my shoes and socks off to get more traction, and that worked and allowed me to get to the top of the series of hills. I ran the rest of the way to work, and fortunately, they weren’t mad at me for being late.

I checked in and everyone was gathered outside the store for a team briefing. I noticed that I was dressed differently than everyone else. They were all wearing stylish suits, and I was wearing more of a frumpy dress. I asked what they wanted me to work on, and my boss was moving things around outside on a sale display but he sent me inside to work on something else. While I was in there, I asked someone if I should buy some new clothes to wear to work. In my dream, Victoria’s Secret sold clothes not lingerie and they started shifting through the racks of clothes pulling out things for me. I said that their store didn’t sell clothes large enough for me so I would have to order online, but in my dream, they did have some larger sizes.

I don’t necessarily have a full interpretation here, but I wanted to share a couple of parallels.

1- Some things aligned with Dylan starting his new job.

  • He went in (late) to work on Saturday (at 8:00) because he was at guard camp. I know he was worried about being late.
  • He had to wear black shoes, and rather than buying new black tennis shoes, he decided to wear his Dinkles from band.

2- Obviously, several things had to do with my persona.

  • Victoria’s Secret was an odd choice for a job first of all. The fact that they sell lingerie points to something about my persona I am keeping hidden, or maybe that’s usually hidden.
  • I also have emotional connections with VS because I am frustrated that they don’t carry any larger sizes in-store. If I purchase their things in real life, I have to order online.
  • I was dressed different and “frumpier” than my coworkers. I think this ties back to my fear of the merger at work. After working from home for so many years, I’m not sure I know what to wear and how to fit in anymore. I certainly would have to go shopping so I have things to wear other than jeans. 😦

A few things to ponder:

  • Malls – I dream about malls a lot. I suspect this is because I worked at a mall at a pivotal time in my life (during and after my divorce). It was the first job I found on my own, and it was the first job I quit. There are lots of emotions tied up in that period.
  • Shoes – For me, this is clearly a symbol of something that helps me get from one place to another. It’s a part of my persona but also practical from a protection standpoint. The fact that I had forgotten my shoes and then took them off anyway is interesting.
  • The hills/slopes in the mall – this one is pretty clear. I know I am stubborn and so it’s not surprising I would refuse help from someone else. Someone tried to tell me to ask for help, but I wanted to fix it for myself. Would it have been easier to ask for help? Maybe, but I remember feeling embarrassed and worried they wouldn’t be able to pull me up because of my weight.

Clean Sweep

I dreamed that I was renting office space in a building. I had two large rooms, but was only using one. I had my desk, phone and Internet in one and then a door led to another room that I was using for storage. The Tenant across the hall asked if they could temporarily rent space, and I walked to the landlords office and she said yes, but then it occurred to me that I could consolidate to one room and they could use the other room. She was ok with that too. I got lost on my way back to the office – there were many hallways and it was on the edge of a mall. Normally I entered from Dillard’s and I couldn’t find Dillard’s. Eventually I found it. I talked to them and they were very interested. They wanted to create a waiting room. We walked into the messy storage room and I was embarrassed for them to see it. The items in there were all things I could get rid of. Then I thought about moving into that room so their waiting room could be across the hall instead of around the corner. I wasn’t sure how the internet and phone would work though. They saw another waiting room with furniture and tv and really liked that.
